The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
