RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
